Concours Musical International de Montréal

JURY
The jury for the Piano 2024 edition of the Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM) will be chaired by Zarin Mehta.

ELIGIBILITY OF CANDIDATES
Young pianists of all nationalities, born between January 1, 1994 and December 31, 2007 can register for the Competition.
First prize winners from previous editions of the CMIM are ineligible for Piano 2024.
All selected competitors must be free of any commitment and available to perform in Montreal between May 5 and 16, 2024, inclusive.

IMPORTANT DATES
Registration period: September 1 to October 31, 2023
Confirmation of participation of competitors: December 15, 2023
Transmission of final programs: January 19, 2024
Announcement of Piano 2024 competitors: February 1, 2024
Arrival of competitors in Montreal: May 3, 2024
First round: May 5 to 7, 2024
Semi-final: May 9 to 12, 2024
Final: May 15 and 16, 2024

PRIZES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
More than $150,000 CAD in prizes and scholarships will be awarded to the winners of the Piano 2024 edition.

PROOFS AND REPERTOIRE
The repertoire chosen for the Competition test programs may include works recorded for the audition videos. No other duplication of repertoire is permitted during the Competition rounds.
The jury will take into account the difficulty and artistic merit of the programs for each event.
At least one classical work and one romantic work must be included in one of the first and/or semi-final programs.

First event – May 5, 6 and 7, 2024
The twenty-four (24) competitors selected for the first event will present a free program of a total duration of 30 to 35 minutes composed of works of their choice.
The ten (10) pianists who receive the best results from the international jury of the Piano 2024 edition of the CMIM will advance to the semi-finals.
The fourteen (14) pianists who are not selected for the semi-final will present their semi-final program at a venue in the greater Montreal area.

Semi-final – May 9, 10, 11 and 12, 2024
First part – Recital
The ten (10) semi-finalists will present a free program of 45 to 50 minutes of music.
The semi-final recital repertoire must consist of a minimum of three (3) works and must include the following elements: 
• a complete sonata;
• the imposed Canadian work;
• another work of your choice.

Second part – Chamber music
The ten (10) semi-finalists will present the first movement of a string quartet with an ensemble of CMIM chamber musicians (violin, viola and cello).
Competitors will choose a work from the following selection:
• Beethoven: Piano Quartet in E flat major, op. 16 Grave – Allegro ma non troppo
• Brahms: Piano and String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25 Allegro
• Fauré: Quartet for piano and strings no . 1, op. 15 Allegro molto moderato
• Mozart: Piano and String Quartet No. 2 in E flat major, KV 493 Allegro
• Schumann: Piano Quartet in E flat major, op. 47 Sostenuto assai – Allegro ma non troppo

The six (6) pianists who receive the best results from the international jury of the Piano 2024 edition will advance to the final.

Final – May 15 and 16, 2024
The six (6) finalists will present a major concerto from the traditional repertoire for piano and symphony orchestra. The choice of concerto must be approved by the Competition management at the time of confirmation of the competitors’ participation.
The finalists will each be entitled to a 50-minute rehearsal with conductor and piano as well as a 50-minute rehearsal with conductor and orchestra.
The finalists will perform their concerto with the Orchester symphonique de Montréal, the official orchestra of the CMIM.
